A pioneering training school in Inverness for prospective coach drivers has got off to a flying start, creating new jobs and moving in to top gear.

The initiative by city-based private hire operator D & E Coaches has produced its first batch of successful applicants passing their test to qualify for PCV (passenger carrying vehicle) licences.

John Cobrough is the qualified trainer who is putting them through their paces – and, after three weeks’ tuition, giving them new career opportunities.

David Maclean, from Inverness, said: “After being a bar supervisor for more than 10 years, I felt it was time for a career change and this training school seemed an attractive idea.

“Studying for a PCV licence has been enjoyable and now I’ve passed and secured a job with D & E, so it’s proved well worthwhile and offers me a fresh start to my working life.”

Wioleta Grzyb, also from Inverness, who was highly commended by the driving examiner, said: “I hadn’t driven a coach before but with John’s training I soon got used to it. I’m delighted to begin a new career as a coach driver.”

Ethan Stewart, of Muir of Ord, said: “I’m a mechanic at D & E and decided to commit to try for a PCV licence. Gaining one gives me an important extra asset.”

Gayle MacEwen, who supervises the project, said the training school shows potential.

“Instead of moaning about a shortage of drivers, we decided to do something about it,” she said.

“We’re happy to hear from anyone who would like to train for PCV status.

"It’s a genuine opportunity for people who fancy a change of job and are interested in driving professionally.”

D & E managing director Donald Mathieson said: “Our training school has proved it’s here to stay as a passport into the bus and coach industry. The tuition prioritises safety of driver, passengers and other road users.”
